Ignition Cylinder Questions

Many months ago, I opened the steering column on my 93 F-250. I tried to reassemble it today and am stuck. The outer portion of the lock cylinder - basically the winged piece you turn - was sitting in my parts container. I thought this piece easily reattached to the rest of the lock cylinder, but I can't seem to make it lock on.

First question - is this part even supposed to be removable? Wondering if perhaps it was broken when I disassembled? I don't recall anything unusual but as I said, it's been some time since I took it apart.

Second - if in fact that part can be separated and reattached, what is the trick? Or perhaps it's usually possible but mine is somehow broken?

Below are two pictures... any help would be appreciated.

i dont think it's supposed to come off. mine flops around like a limp biscuit, if there is a fix for this, other than a whole new lock assembly, i would love to hear it.

Yeah it would be nice to find a fix. The cylinders look fairly cheap and easy to replace, but I'm not keen on having a different key for the ignition vs. doors.

Hopefully someone has a definitive answer one way or another.

Get a new cylinder & take it to a competent locksmith with the old key. They can re-pin the ignition cylinder for the old key or cut you new keys with the old door lock pattern & new ignition cylinder pattern. The key front/nose is for the ignition. The rear half is for the doors.

You could be like me, with a driver door that doesn't lock and an ignition cylinder that lets me easily pull the key out while driving!

(although there's nothing valuable in my truck. My radio was $20 NEW)

Excellent, thanks for the great document there.

I ended up just buying a replacement cylinder at AutoZone for $17.99. Works like a champ, but I'd still like to figure out how to get a single key. From reading that document, it seems that I now need a key with positions 1,2,3,4,6 from the new key (for the ignition) and positions 5,7,8,9,10 from the old key (for the doors.) Right?

And - how would I go about this? I contacted my local locksmith and although friendly, he did not seem to want any part of this. He wants to sell me an unkeyed ignition cylinder for $50 and key it to my old key. I can't blame the guy, probably not a sustainable business model for him to mess around with this sort of thing.

Anyway, I measured the keys with my micrometer and from that document, am confident I know the measurements for each of the 10 positions. So - can a Ford dealer punch something like this? Online somewhere maybe?

Well, none of my nearby dealers even do their own keys, they have a recommended shop. You might call & ask if they will tell you who they use.

Don't understand why the guy you talked to won't just cut your new keys with the door pattern. A job is a job & customer service is customer service. Sad.
