'98 Ford Ranger intake noise
A friend of mine has a '98 Ford Ranger 4.0 liter that has a weird intake noise. The noise doesn't occur all the time, just tempermental. It sounds kinda like a shop vac. We took the lid off the filter box and let it run and the noise sounded like it was coming from around the MAF sensor. The truck runs like a top without missing a beat, and has around 70,000 miles on it. Could the MAF sensor be going bad???

Yep, if it sounds like a honking sound, that's it.
Mine would do it when I dropped to an idle, after driving about 1.5 to 2 miles from cold start. If you tap the throttle, it'll usually kill the noise.
Clean the IAC valve, per the posts here. Be sure to use Throttle Body cleaner, not carb cleaner.
