Now that I finally have a real Ford engine on my homemade run stand , I want to wire a Ford solenoid into the stand, so I don’t have to resort to the ‘TOUCH THIS TO THIS’ method. I have a Ford solenoid with two small terminals, but neither are marked. Anyway my universal Key start switch Has terminals marked BATT, IGN, ST, & ACC. I know I won’t be using the ACC, but what is the right method to wire this that I can use this key through the ford solenoid. I opted for an aftermarket HEI so only one wire is needed for that to the Battery side of the cap, and I assume that would be from the IGN on the switch? Thanks- Crossy.
Run a wire from the ST on switch to the "S" terminal on the solenoid. If you look very close, you should see a s and a i terminal markings on the small terminals.
Make sure the solenoid is bolted to a good ground on the frame of the stand. Or run a ground wire from the engine block to the mount on the solenoid if you are going to run the large ground to the engine block from the battery.
Run a large wire from the battery to the large post on the solenoid. Run another large wire from the solenoid to the starter. The large terminal nearer the small i terminal goes to the starter.
Run a smaller wire with a fuse off the large terminal of the solenoid that goes to the battery over and hook it to the BAT terminal of the ignition switch.
Dang, that's exactly what I did except for the fuse and I get nothing, so I guess the Solenoid I had marked as 'good' isn't anymore. I guess if I buy a new one today I should just buy a tractor type with only one terminal(S) connection. thanks, Crossy
