I recently bought a 1973 f100. Has 302 with auto transmission. It sat for over two years. Replaced the battery. The solenoid looks new. It has two wires on the battery side plus the lead from battery. One wire on starter side going to starter. There are no wires on the front two terminals just a jumper connecting the two. When I try to connect the battery terminals I get a big spark and the starter engages. I tried unplugging the key switch no difference. Is it wired correctly? I looked at wiring diagrams and some are wired this way. Bad solenoid??
'Not wired correctly.. remove the jumper from the two lil terminals. What effin idiot did that?? Nonetheless...
Refer to the image below. Look for for a brown wire and a red wire with a blue trace.
Connect the brown wire to the rear I terminal (ignition-on signal) and the red/blue wire to the front S terminal (starter-on signal). Attempt to start using ignition switch.

Reason: reversed the wires in my head...
There are no wires on the front two terminals just a jumper connecting the two.
Are you saying the "S" and "I" terminals (the small ones) have a jumper wire between them? If so, get rid of it.
The "S" terminal is the wire from the switch to engage the starter. The "I" terminal is the 12v hot to the ignition.
Thanks. Yes the "S" and "I" terminals have a jumper between them. Thanks for the diagram. Makes more sense why the problem. The PO had it wired this way for some reason. Thanks again!!
