Need help identifying part

truck is a 1977 f150 4x4 with a 400. It is equipped with ca emissions equipment so I have a hard time finding the right part often. Any ideas what this is, what it does, and where it should go. Rebuilt the motor and didn't label this little guy.

That's a distributor modulation valve, part of the emissions control system. Usually, but not always, attached to the right valve cover.

Older Chilton manuals have the 400 vacuum diagrams.

This is not a 12A170 distributor modulator valve, because there's none listed for any 1977/79 F100/350 w/a 400 (or 351M).

There's another valve that looks similar, basic number is 9D474. The original should have an ID number on it.

Numberdummy, the part number wore off. I tried to clean it to see the number with scotchbrite wore it right off

Yup, I missed the mark on that one .
9D474 is EGR solenoid vacuum valve.

This vacuum diagram is absolutely fabulous. Does the maintenance repair manual (or Chilton manual) come with a legend/comments section to describe the acronyms?

VCV? = Vacuum Value?
VCDV = Vacuum _______ Valve?
Air BPV = Air Bypass Valve?

Great post 77&79! Never knew I had a vacuum diagram in my old manuals... I'll have to keep an eye out for it when I go to reroute/repair all my missing vacuum lines.

No rush!

I was just curious if anyone knew if there was a legend/descriptions listed in the manuals. Just helps me to understand exactly what I'm looking at lol

VCV=ported vacuum switch
VCDV=vacuum controlled delay valve
Air BPV=Thermactor air by-pass valve (differential without vacuum vent)
VRDV= vacuum retard delay valve
TVV=thermal bowl vent valve
V Rest=vacuum restriction
LCV=load control valve
TVS=temperature vacuum switch
