300 New Carb

1986 Bronco XLT 300 inline 6 NP435
I'm looking to get a new carb and trying to figure out what works best for my setup and I see a lot of differing views on posts everywhere. So to start I want to know what information do I need to make the right choice? This will be my weekend warrior/grocery getter so looking for nice drive-ability and to add power. Also want to know what would be good to replace with it, I've read a lot about a new intake manifold/exhaust etc. to really get improvement with a new carb
CFM looking between 390-500. Really like the Edelbrock 500 but I have no experience in this area

Unfortunately yes AZ. but there are some ways to get around it. How much does that limit carb choice? Depending on what will/will not pass emissions I could use a loophole

From what I know, Arizona is quite tight on emissions. What are the regulations?
Is it JUST a sniffer test? Do they check to make sure components are installed and in place?

Here in Idaho, we do a sniffer test up until '83, and with a good catalytic converter, I pass with ease every time. It takes a few tweaks of the idle mixture to get it where it should be, but when it does, it's usually around 20% of the allowed limits. Really low.

But, if they require an EGR, etc. You're going to have a much tougher time.

To my knowledge they just do a sniffer test (assuming that's hooking it up to the tailpipe) and a gas cap pressure test. I took it in when I first got it and it was blowing 4 times the allowable amount. But this was before I did anything to it and after I realized the previous owner cut out the muffler and just welded a straight pipe on it.

"...trying to figure out what works best for my setup..."

That is the key. In order to find out what works the best for you will require some trial and experimenting especially if moving beyond what is strictly stock. There are usually no one-size-fits-all formulas.

You'll definitely want to be sure of what your regulations are. And then at that point, it's your own gamble if you think you have the skills to tune/tweak it once it's all set up to get it to pass. Lastly, if there are areas around you that have more stringent emissions tests, you wouldn't be able to take it with you should you move, or sell it to someone who lives there.
Just things to be fully aware of before you dive in. If you're okay with that, it's a fun project.

To get you going, the upgrade info has been covered dozens of times on here with lots of different configurations. Do some searches, research, read, take notes, etc. Then, be sure to post any specific questions you might have.
