PO172 code
New to forum, but I got an issue. Took my 2002 4.2 F150 to the dealer and the computer says misfire in cyl 1. They believe there is coolant leaking into the cylinder. I have had to add coolant, but had no idea where it went to. I don't have any discolored oil and haven't noticed white smoke from the exhaust. Could this be the problem with the error code or is our something else. Much appreciated.
Jim
Cylinder 1 misfire code is 301.
Code 172 is bank 1 to rich.
They could be related with the 301 taking precedence causing the 172 code.
Pressure test the cooling system and check the coolant for exhaust gas presence as a start unless there is positive evidence in cylinder 1 that coolant is getting into that cylinder causing the misfire.
The misfire can cause that banks code 172 with unburnt gas passing through.
Or they could be unrelated as two separate troubles.
Some one needs to be sure about it so guessing is not being done.
Good luck.
They will charge for the time and expense.
Since you have misgivings, I gave you more infor as common sense diagnostics to be more sure.
Common sense tells you coolant does not burn in a cylinder and can prevent combustion if enough passes through.
It can even contaminate the cat and the Ox sensor in time for that bank with Glycerin from the anti freeze.
Maybe the cooling system has a leak independent of the cylinder.
That's what needs to be sure about.
All this dictates what the final repairs will be as well as the effect on total costs.
Good luck.
