Frozen door locks?

I haven't had a frozen door lock in 20 years yet this morning the front passenger and rear drivers door locks were both frozen. Tried multiple times to get them unlock no luck. By the time I got home from a 10 mile run to town and back with the heat blasting on high the front passenger door unlocked, the rear drivers door still froze. I'm talking the lock ****, doesn't move up or down. It was 14 degrees this morning.

That was common when I did business back east and in Canada in the winter. The hotels kept cans of WD40 on the counter for people to spray in their locks. It affected multiple brands.

Moisture, metal and freezing cold makes for problems in locks of many kinds including vehicles. WD40 (Water Disperser, 40th try) works wonders on these types of problems.

I have never had a truck not unlock but have had the rubber freeze the door shut. By sounds of your post the door will not unlatch?

That being said my truck is in the shop with issues locking and unlocking doors. Seems like computer does not understand commands. Build quality of my truck is horrid. 6 major problems since picking up in October.

Check the F-150 forums on the 2015+ models which we share a cab with. Tons of problems with doors not latching and not unlocking properly in cold weather. We have a 2016 F-150 in the family which is having this problem on a passenger side door. My 2017 has been fine so far, 6F this morning, -10F a few weeks back.

I used to work in an electronics manufacturing facility and when testing the products in a 2-corner temperature test, we would ramp temp up to 50C and let it soak for 2 hours then run functionality tests, then drop the temp in the chamber to 0C, let soak, test function....etc.. This is most likely how they test their electronics. I guarantee you they do not test functionality to any negative Fahrenheit temperature. That goes for any electronic part in your vehicle, unless they have special parts that go in the trucks being delivered to very cold temperature places, even then I'm not sure they would run special batches. Just speaking from a mfg perspective.

That's actually good news in a way. If you were able to manually unlock the door and open it then that suggests its something electronic that's malfunctioning vs something mechanical that's physically frozen up. Also tells me that I could manually unlock the doors to get in or in an emergency get out of the vehicle right. I would not want to be trapped inside with no means of escape other than busting out a window.

By any chance when you attempt to unlock or lock do you see the door lock stick go up and down repeatedly? As if it unlocked then locked again right away? Or the other way around when unlocking?

Something to the effect of your child having fun inside the cab hitting the lock unlock buttons to mess with you.

It didn't move up or down, and appeared to be stuck half way.

Yes, our 2016 F-150 does this. It is not an electronic problem. A sticking lock mechanism will cause the actuator to do this. I've had other vehicles with this problem that weren't Fords.

This is NOT an electronic problem. You cannot "pull up" the front door lock buttons - they only come up when the door handle is pulled from the inside or are operated electrically. The rears you can pull up.

I don't think anyone has ever had a problem getting out of their vehicle with this problem...just problems with getting the door to shut and stay shut.
