Tire questions

Not that I need tires at this point my truck doesn't even have 5K on it yet but I saw that the standard wranglers that come on the truck are standard load tires. Does that matter? When I buy my next set is it ok to get standard load or load range E tires. My dad always bought load range E tires for his truck but he towed alot with that truck so I just don't know if it would be worth it or will standard load tires do the job just fine? Thanks in advance.

Don't know what truck you have, what size tires you have, or what loads you carry.

By standard load do you mean a P-tire or what? The sidewall will show the load capacity of the tire, and at what psi it will carry that load. Please post that and the size.

My Expedition has factory 275/65R18 Goodyear Wrangler Fortitude H
sidewall rated at 2,765 pounds load @ 51psi Load Index 116T

A load E tire won't increase the truck's load capacity; your rims and axles still have the same limits and it doesn't change your GVWR or GCWR. The tire will be stiffer and heavier, negatively impact your MPGs and ride quality.

Maybe it will wear better (last longer) in a high-towing environment, but I see no reason to pay extra money to sacrifice ride quality and MPGs when the "stock" load rating is already significantly higher than other component limitations on the truck.

My truck is a 16 F150 SCREW and I have the same exact tires on my truck as well. So I was just randomly looking at what tires cost. I was looking on discounttiredirect.com I usually order my tires from them some tires say load range SL on their site and other say load range E. My dad always bought load range E for his trucks so I looked into what load range SL was and they have a chart it says standard load. So I guess my question is what's the difference and is it worth getting load range E tires? I don't do alot of hauling so I don't think I would buy load range E but what is the benefit to having them or having a tire that is like the OEM tire (standard load)? I guess what I'm saying is what benefit is there to go to load range E over a tire rated like the Wranglers that come in the truck.

A tire with stiff sidewalls will flex less when hauling a heavy load or when towing and will "fishtail" less. unless you are planning to do a bunch of either I would opt for standard duty tires.

You can find a load range C or D tire, but they're not as common as they once were. It seems that anymore it's SL or E. I put E rated tires on my truck because I had no other choice in the size I wanted. They don't ride that bad. I actually prefer them to the squishy Goodyears that the truck came with.

I don't know why, when the truck I bought is equipped with the max trailer tow package that it had SL tires. The load range C tires are a stand alone option. HD payload package trucks get load range E tires.

As far as the tires I have now, tread wear is barely noticeable at 9k miles. Toyo Open Country AT IIs.

Thanks for the replies I just started looking at tires just to see pricing and what was out there. Not that I will need them anytime soon just got curious and wondered what the difference was. Makes sense because my dad hauls a fifth wheel quite often so it would make sense for him to use load range E. I will most likely stick with SL when I do buy tires because major hauling at this point is something that will be few and far between for me.
