2005 E-150 Cruise control add

Is it possible to add cruise control to a 2005 E-150? It is a friend's van, dealer told him $800 to add it. Looking at the information, it appears to be a drive by wire engine (4.6L) and if it is like others I have seen (my 2011 Flex) then it is all in the PCM. The questions being, is it a different PCM for cruise vs non-cruise, is the wiring there as far as the clockspring is concerned so that only the steering wheel would be different?

Thanks for any help on this, owner is a paraplegic and injured his shoulder so holding the throttle handle down for extended periods makes his arm go numb.

They show nothing for any Ford, nice looking systems though.

It will not work on a vehicle with an electronic throttle, there are no external mechanical points to work the throttle, it has a stepper motor and feedback pots along with a TPS. The accelerator pedal only works a rheostat, like a Powerstroke uses, no physical connection between the accelerator and the throttle plate. Hooking it to the pedal inside would work, but my original question concerned the factory system and feasibility of using what is there.

if you want factory, go to a junkyard and get all the parts you need.

800 sounds cheap to me for factory stuff

Sorry, I didn't know a 2005 was so different than my 2004

That seems to be the year they changed, My question I was trying to get answered was if anyone knew, other than the steering wheel, and maybe clockspring what was different. like maybe the PCM.

There was a change in '05 model, the "kit" they sell works from '05 - '08.

Here the listing for the "Kit"

All that's needed is to replace the steering wheel and the clock spring.

Then go to a dealer and have the PMC "flashed" to "turn on cruse control"

Also, you can not have the ABS warning light on, or it will not work.

I'm in the same year ('05) and can't see the price ($499.95) for this, and have been watching the Pick-n-pull for one in case the van has the CC. No luck yet.

Plus, your looking at the dealer charging you $100-$120 for the "flash"

I guest the price the dealer quoted you is not so bad considering your up to $620 for the above, plus your time to change out the steering wheel and clock spring.

I'm in need of this for the 6-7 hour drives I've been doing, leg cramps are getting to me But then again, I'll wait until I find the parts at the P-n-P first, to save the wallet cramps and the leg cramps.

As for flashing, if it is an EEC-V box, I may be able to do it myself, EEC-VI, no.

No, from what I followed up on this, it has to be thru the dealer service department - "Dealer programming is required." Same as if you needed a key programmed.

What are you thinking of using, a OBD scanner??

No, I have a software package I use to flash the EEC-V system I installed on my 1986 F-350 when I converted it to MAF/SEFI from carbureted. I use a Mongoose Pro pass through cable to provide the 18 volt signal to put the EEC in the flash mode. I am going to graze my local PNP sometime anyway, Even if I have to get him a wheel, clockspring and PCM it will still be cheaper.

I think your off a couple of generations from the ECC electronics to the major change in '97+ PCM electronics, and to the '05 fly by wire systems.

But, you bring up a good point about getting the PCM from the '05+ donor from the P-N-P and making this a complete plug and play system
