Ive been hearing a lot about blow-by to give somewhat of an idea of the shape of the motor. Yes mine has some blow-by. I read they all do. BUT, I have the white smoke coming out of the filler hole with cap removed. I have placed the cap upside down and it moves off center of hole about a 1/4 inch and stops. Ive seen others that move all the way off the hole. I change the oil at 5000 miles. In 5000 miles it will be down halfway between the full and the add mark which indicates 1 qt. low. Am I just being paranoid?
I can't say definitively, but the one i just bought has 318K on the clock, and I did the oil cap test before I bought it and it was fine. Mine, as well as my buddy with the powerstroke bronco both have some white smoke blowing out of the valve cover with it running. As long as the cap doesn't lift off, then it technically passes that test. The engine vibrates quite a bit, so it it shakes somewhat, that is unavoidable. My dad's 99 7.3 has a little bit of white smoke coming out of his too, but he has less than 200k on that engine. I wouldn't be worried unless that cap lifts off quite a bit. Even then, some people go awhile after noticing it lifts up before rebuilding/replacing the engine. Somebody more experienced with these engines can hopefully chime in and explain better. I just recently became a powerstroke owner only a few weeks ago.
I have 2 of them. I love em. What year did you have?

1997 F250 5speed 7.3 4x4. It is a sweet truck so far.
I owned an 01 2500 4x4 24 valve cummins dodge a few years ago and that was an excellent truck as well.
Not sure on the 97. My 95 has the digital odometer, they don't go past 300K. Mine hit 399,999 and went back to 300. Mine says 304K buts its actually 404k
I have heard of that odometer thing. I don't know for sure but I have heard the 96 and 97s don't do that. My odometer says 318k but the condition it is in and how well it runs, it seems odd it would be that high to me. Already pulled the gauge cluster to swap in LED lights and it had writing on the side that is identical to what junkyards do when you buy parts from them. So I'm thinking that a previous owner swapped the whole thing out and didnt know the original odometer can remain. It had a Box C title (mileage unknown) too. However, I do know that a properly maintained vehicle will go much longer than 318k. My 24 valve Cummins had 327k on the original motor when I sold it, and it was in good shape as well. So who knows.
97-PSD, yes sir, that's what I do....a lot It starts like a dream. Always has. Under normal conditions it doesn't turn over a second, second and a half tops and fires up. Wish my 01 did that.

Ive had many mechanics tell me a million is not uncommon for these motors. You probably know, but one thing that gets overlooked is the antifreeze. I drain my radiator every year. Fill it up with distilled water and run it a few days. Drain and do it again. Then fill it up with fleet charge. Never had a problem

The coolant system was the one thing that the PO badly neglected unfortunately. The wrong thermostat plus super old dirty coolant and the temp needle barely moved. I flushed it quite a bit with distilled water and then ran it and then drained and flushed it again and then filled it. Now it gets hot and the heater gets super hot. Still needs another super good flush though. I did add the SCA additive as well. I'm going to do a water pump change within a year that has a coolant filter too so that should help.
