Hello people,
Yesterday I looked at two trucks, both were '99 with about 230k mikes.
I removed the oil filler cap, and turned it upside down to see If it would blow off, it did not- which is good, but there was a noticeable amount of smoke coming out of the oil fill tube, one truck was a little heavier smoke than the other. The only way I can think of describing it(it's a weird way of describing) is if someone drew a puff of a cigarette, and then exhaled, about half of that...lol...
TIA
My 99 is at 250K and it doesn't blow the cap off NOR does it show any smoke from the filler neck. Some others have blown cap and a littel smoke and are running good. I think it may something to do with the type and grade of oil is in there.
Have you got to test drive it? Any leaks or drips? How does it do on cold starts?

Hope thats the case, but i'm on my 3rd oil change, with each one, try'n different manuf. Currently run'n del-vac 15-40, but tryed rotella 15/40, rotella syn blend 10/30...
Yeah drove it. Few issues. A little slow to crank but fires up fine. Starter replaced bout 6 months ago. Batteries look old, and kinda small.
Other thing is when going down the road and hit some bumps, you can hear done bumping noises line loose shocks, he said it's the bushings On the swaybars... Other than that it's seems to run normal, shifts good, super clean in and out..,
The other truck with the less smoke was sold today..
THe "bumping" is typically the bushings. If you get the truck and you go to replace them, replace the track bar bushings too.
Replace the batteries soon too. Once they give less than 10.5V it will crank but not start.
I def will post pics if i get it. I'm a little on the fence though....I would be getting it for 7k...just not 100% sure if the mileage is worth the money...
Mine smokes a different amount with different oil brands. The smoke amount and smell also varies between hot and cold engine and how many miles since the last oil change.
I started watching it and testing some different things back when I only had around 300,000 miles on it. I had anywhere from almost no noticeable smoke up to what looked like 3 guys blowing cigarette smoke. (steady stream, not puffs).
Pressure is the key here, not smoke. Place you're hand over the fill tube to see if you feel anything, both hot and cold. Try a ping pong ball instead of the oil cap. If there's no pressure, don't let the smoke bother you.
Don't forget to play up the high price of diesel right now when negotiating price. I just spent over $100 filling my truck up today.
