Transfer case

Well, today while driving the snowy pass in 4 hi, my T case just popped into neutral. I pulled over got it back into 4 hi but now she makes a nasty noise! Goes away when in 2bi. The chain aint broke (yet) cause the front wheels still get traction. May have something to do with the shifting fork but not sure. Any ideas what im up against? Thanks.
e4od in a 91 f250 haven't crawled under yet because it's dark and in lots of snow so, not certain which T case I have. 1356 maybe?

Justin

probably a 1356 case, and probably the pump let loose and the t-case is getting ready to self destruct due to lack of lubrication.
common issue with the 1356 t-case.

Damage done you think? I get the feeling (by listening to it) that just replacing the pump and changing the oil isn't gonna fix it ...

Found one in Prosser. About an hour and a half from me. $200 slip yoke rear with manual shift.

Just to confirm it's the t-case and not something "downstream", try unlocking the hubs and driving in 4HI. If it still makes noise, then it's most likely the t-case. If no noise while unlocked, you may have an issue with the hubs themselves. Also make sure the front driveshaft and axle shafts turn freely by hand while in 2HI with the hubs unlocked.
