I have an 89 f250 xlt with a bw1345 transfer case. It recently started having a little slack in the drive train while shifting gears. Now; over the past week and a half, I hear a lot of chattering when I am coasting. If I have my foot on the gas, the shattering stops. Has anyone been through this and is it something I can repair at home. I'm not bad with the wrenches but this is my first 4 wheel drive so I am at a loff for knowledge. I checked the fluid level in the transfer case and it took about a pint and a half.............
Could be a loose chain in the case, the cases are real easy to work on,pretty self explanitory pull the case, put it up on a bench and tear it down driveshaft end is what u remove the part that bolts to the trans has the 4wlo part and u dont wanna tear into that.google the transfer case and it will give u an idea of what ull haveto do. Are u sure the u joints are good?
You sure you have the 13-45? All 89s should have the 13-56 model case... Do you have a slip yolk driveshaft or a standard yolk? At any rate, these cases take 2 qts ATF... You were kinda low. Ive disassembled a 13-56, but never been inside a 13-45
Hey Deeznut, I think the chain might be the problem. I managed to locate the previous owner who I bought the truck from. He is a heavy equipment mechanic. He thought the chain might be the place to look also. About a month ago I slid off the road into some deep snow and got my plow frame hung up. I had put it in low range while trying to get out. My girl came up with her truck and we pulled it out. I had forgot about being in low and was high-revving while getting pulled out. I blew the water pump in the process. Do you think that I might have done the damage to the transfer case at the same time. (thats what I think I did). Is there any way to check the condition of the chain before I drop the transfer case? (movement in the drive shafts) etc, etc, etc.......
Good morning Blue Rebel, I will check into the yokes on this animal. As for the U joints, I believe they are all in good shape. I get no movement from the rear drive shaft when the truck is parked and in gear. It seems tight. The front has quite a bit of play in it, but the u joints seem tight and in good shape. As for the transfer case. i spoke with the previous owner last night and he confirmed the 1345 (aluminum).
1356 is aluminum, u could have bad u joints,u check those in netural with no load on the shaft. In park theres a load on them because they holding the truck. As for the transfer case u should only notice the chain when the hubs are locked in or the case is in 4wd. U could lock the transfer in 4wd and climb down under the truck and turn the front shaft to check for play in the chain.
^^^Correct, but to most people it looks like aluminum. Thing is i dont belive the 13-45 ever came with a slip yolk rear driveshaft. I believe they were all fixed yolk.
Thanks to all who have replied. Deeznuts822; i'll look at those u joints later this a.m. Its been raining here for the last 48 hours.----1966Tbird; I have no prior experience inside these transfer cases so when I get there I will look into the ring gear and backlash theories.----------Blue Rebel; I will confirm the fixed yokes when I get under my rig later this morning. I'm hitting the rack as soon as I post this. The rain has had me inside for the past two days and my girlfriends escape is giving me some issues also. At least she has a garage to work in. . Thanks again all.........
Paul, does she have TWO sisters??? and i think it is the chain as well. especially if you have the gears holding the truck in 4WD and the front shaft is still moving. this is EXACTLY why i prefer geared cases like the NP205 and the Atlas.
good mornig all. Sorry guys, no available sisters. There is one but she is half a bubble off and married anyway. The garage is a plus isn't it. She has an 07 sportster too; thats right, she rides too. Hey Blue Rebel, I wasn't aware that the tcase had no ring gear but I was thinking he was talking about the rear end anyway. At least the only time I ever heard anyone talk about backlash was refering to a rear end.--------460/5; I think your theory holds water. I am going to wait for the wind to dry the driveway off a bit and I will be under my rig in an hour or two to see what i can find out. Thanks again all........
OK there Deeznuts882 and 460/5; I just came in from checking things out. When I have my rig in 2wd, there is all kind of slack or play in the front shaft. When it is in 4wd and I try to turn it there is less than 1/4 inch of movement in the front shaft. The rear shaft is tight. My u-joints all seem to be ok. Could this be strictly a linkage problem???? Everything shifts in and out properly with no loose or unwanted slop. I wonder if the linkage bar has become worn at the ends where it attaches to the tcase or the shifting lever? It all seems to be tight and in order. I'm really at a loss here. Its still raining so I have been a bit reluctant to get out there under things and get wet. I'm layed off right now so I have all the time in the world for now. I may just drive it to a tranny shop and see if they can shed some light on my issues. I really hate to have anyone work on my rigs when I am able to do the work myself. I have saved myself a small fortune over the years doing my own wrenching.
