Heater Duct question

Hello everyone,

Been lurking but this is my first post. I recently bought a 1977 F250 Custom 2WD w/ 351 and no AC. I replaced my heater core and the blower motor today. I noticed though, that the Y-shaped vent that goes up to the defrost openings doesn't connect to the actual heater box. It seems there is a short square shaped length of duct hose that goes between the Y vent and the heater box. Does anyone have an extra, or have they found something that works instead?

I am talking about part #18547 in this photo.

#18547 is a black plastic ribbed xylophone like (compressed to go in then expands to lock in place, set up). Probably have to hit a JY.

I do not think I have an extra, I will try to look tomorrow.

No 18547 gasket listed the parts catalog for F100/350 after 1976.

There's only one illustration of the fresh air heater for 1973/79, but the text section doesn't list the gasket for 1977/79.

In fact, it's only listed for 1975/76 with fresh air heater: D5TZ-18547-A

Drudging up an old thread for good purpose.

Does anyone have a picture of what the vent looks like?

Is it plastic or paper? I would assume paper as the diffuser below the heater box is paper.

Just found this post online: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...rost-duct.html

Looks a lot like paper to me, but can someone confirm?

99% sure its plastic with metal staples holding to the defroster vent on the top and plastic like rivets 380457-S holding it on the bottom.

Why use that stuff, when you could just do this?

Saw that in a truck at the UPullandPay a couple of years ago. Guess it beats driving with no heat in the winter.

I also just noticed that the whale tail for the fresh air heater box is 100% different from the A/C whale tail (Top "Y-shaped" plastic to defrost the windows).

This conversion from A/C to just a heater box is going to be harder than I thought!

Sounds like you need a part#18490 without part # 18547....

Or 18490 that has a different lower end...

You're correct on both accounts, also correct that either could work.

I'm debating modifying the heater box completely as this retro-fit isn't turning out as easy as I thought it would.

I can see now why many of you have deleted the A/C box, mounted an A/C block-off plate, and called it a day...

However... I need heat lol. Canada is cold!!!! especially in Saskatchewan!

I might do a write-up on my mods so that everyone can get a view of how I did it, what tools, the modifications, etc. Wondering if anyone would even use it tho lol... Lots of you guys seem satisfied with no heater in your truck.
