The 1967 buckets and lens do fit - and with an extra couple of wires you can get backup lights. Your 1979 transmission probably has a provision for a reverse circuit, which is typically just the ground source for the lights.
TA455HO, that sounds like a plan. What is another couple wires with my wiring nightmare.
I step on brakes and one tail light works, the other shuts off. And my front orange lights also get brighter. Nice.Painless right! LOL!

Reason: added orange
Some general troubleshooting steps in here. I think this guy was having turn signal issues, but similar to brake light issues. If this helps, great. If not no loss except for a bit of time.
NumberDummy, thanks for the particulars. That broadens my options. At least one of my buckets has a previously damaged hole in the bucket. Either from past efforts to replace bulbs or just age and weather.
I tried to get new bulbs into the socket, they really didn't want to go deep enough to fit into the socket like they should.
I thought about buying just pigtails, but they may not connect into the hole of the bucket. The pigtails would be the cheapest option.
