OK, I have a question. I have searched for this issue on the forums and haven't seen the exact problem that I see. This morning I went to go to the corner to buy something, I knew it was colder than usual, -12F. I did not plug in the pre-heater last night. I let the truck idle for 15 minutes before moving it. It was still idling high. The P0087 code is the only code popping- is this just because of the cold temp? I haven't owned a diesel since my '79 Rabbitt, and this engine is as different from that as night is day. this didn't happen yesterday but it only got down to -2F and warmed up to about 18F.
Sounds like it could be a fuel gelling issue. Low fuel pressure. You drained the water filter lately? Or changed your fuel filters? Might try some Ford PM-23 or similar in the tank.
No, I haven't drained the water filter lately, have been remiss in doing that. Will do that as soon as it gets above freezing in the next few days. will look into the fuel additive-fuel is supposed to be winterized on this side of the Cascades- Oh the things you learn on these forums- I should have read the supplemental more closely, didn't know about either the PM 22 or PM 23. haven't reached the point of having to change the fuel filters yet.
Went to dealer- gave (Rather sold) me something called BFG-Cetane boost and anti-gelling-added to tank limped to fuel station that sells winterized fuel, filled up, limped home and let idle for 1.5 hours. Applied accelerator to up the idle to 2k RPM and Problem solved........thanks for the help strokin', much appreciated
