This morning, the driver's heated seat in my 2012 Lariat did not seem to operate properly. (It worked fine approx 14 hours earlier.) Note that my seats have both the heat and cool options.
I started the truck (its NOT garaged and the air temp was -5 F, which has been kinda typical lately) and turned on the driver's heated seat to high (level 3). I noticed that the seat's 'air noise' was more than normal (I've always noticed a more air noise with the 'cool' setting ......... no, I was not using 'cool' instead of 'heat' !) and that the seat never warmed up during the 10 minute drive. (Normally it would be noticeably warm in less than 5 minutes.) The 'air noise' seemed to cycle off/on toward the end of the drive. I did not have a passenger, so I did not have a chance to try that seat.
Any suggestions ?
I've owned the truck about 2 years and had never run into this before.
The heat is generated by a heating element wired through a loop in your seat. The wire heats up due to resistance and that is what warms the seat. In your case, the wire element is broken due to age and use. You can take the seat cover off and you will find burnt spot(s) in the seat foam and you will know where to fix. Or, just buy a new one.

Hmm, I thought the heated/cooled seats, like I have, were based more on circulating air, rather than a heating wire.
One thing that I did not mention in the original post on this topic, is that I had tried to start the truck via (factory) remote start. The start aborted mid-crank, and subsequent remote starts did not even attempt to start the truck- lights just blinked. So after that remote start failure, the heated seats did not work. (Truck started just fine via normal, key-in-the-ignition, start.)
The heated seats then have worked since ............... until ............
I had a failed remote start yesterday, and once again, the heated seats did not produce heat. After a 10 mile drive, I turned the truck off, did a successful remote start, and then the heated seats worked.
So I'm wondering if the failed remote start (potentially due a weakening truck battery) is somehow preventing heated seats from working ? Crazy coincidence ?
If you have a battery attempting to fail, the truck may be shutting off options until the drive has charged up the battery enough so it thinks things are good.
