I check my water separator monthly; i just filled up yesterday at a Sam's Club (usually use Fred Meyer) and checked the separator today:. Got about 2C of totally clear liquid--looks like water but smells like diesel. Is this winter blend (clear) or is it water? No dash warnings and I've driven about 100mi since fueling up...
Set it to read ohms and measure the resistance. If it reads a resistance, then might be water.
I do not have any diesel fuel handy but did just check the resistance of water, 70% rubbing alcohol (contains water), gasoline and cooking oil. Alcohol and water measured some resistance. Cooking oil and gasoline showed open or no conductivity.
Try it if you have ohm meter and report back what you measure for resistance.
Stick your fingers in it. Is it slimy like DF, or watery like water? Run a little tap water in to the jar of fluid.....does it go right to the bottom, or just disappear?
Only other thing would be to drop a hydrometer in it to check specific gravity. Pretty hard for us to tell from a picture on the internet.
If you drove it home with no problems you are probably OK, but it is always good to be sure.
Good luck!!
That's what my diesel looks like up here. D1-S15... crystal clear, no tint to it at all. It's winter blend... I'm assuming you filled up in a cold state and live in a warm state.
I never saw clear diesel until I moved up here, previous located was South Florida...
Hey bud water does not dissolve in diesel and is heavier so if it is water it will be at the bottom in a distinct separate phase.

Actually you are now about 10 miles north of me... Moved to South Anchorage.
Since I see two Alaska peeps here from my area, I am wondering where you guys get fuel in South Anchorage? With my 7.3, I didn't care, but are there any places I should be avoiding in South Anchorage with my 2015? I am pretty new to the Anchorage area and have had this question on my mind for some time.
As previously mentioned, it is most likely kerosene - #1 Diesel. The easiest way to tell is just to take a small amount of water and add it to the jar. If the water falls immediately to the bottom of the jar and forms droplets, or a "puddle" in the bottom of the jar, you know that the stuff that came out of your tank is kero. If the water disappears into solution, the remaining contents are also water. As also mentioned, you can tell be feel, the difference between water and hydrocarbon. Feeling isn't necessarily the healthiest way to check the difference, but will work.

I've never filled up with bad fuel per se. Since I shop at Carrs I get fuel points and they work with chevron. Chevron has power service extreme diesel, which is supposed mean a higher cetane rating and more frequent testing to ensure higher quality fuel. But that doesn't mean I haven't filled up at Holiday, Costco, Fred Meyer, Shell, or the Carrs itself. I do notice a smoother running motor with Chevron, since I started using it this summer.
Some people I personally know have reported issues with Fred Meyer fuel, but I haven't noticed an issue. I do use my own additives though. So I might not be the best person to ask.

In WA, I always filled at truck stops. Here, there are not truck stops. I'm good with Chevron and will likely fill up there as a habit. Pretty easy in and out. I was just wondering if there was a bad list. I was also thinking Costco might not be a bad spot.
No truck stops here that I know of... Ticks me off because you can't get bulk DEF here -or- at least I haven't found a place for pay at the pump DEF...
Costco is top tier, believe it or not. And they JUST started selling diesel.
I have no clue where you routinely go, but if you are ever around the Chevron on Benson and Minnesota, they always has the best price for diesel. The one off Old Seward Highway and O'Malley Centre Blvd is usually the most expensive. The one on New Seward and Fireweed is a close second, as is, the one on Minnesota and Spenard.

All good information. I've been getting my diesel at Carrs on Abbott, but I am always worried as I never see other diesels in there filling up. I like places that go through lots of diesel. I will definitely start getting fuel at Chevron at Benson/Minnesota as that is right by my work. I would've gone to the one on O'Malley if you wouldn't have said something. I was wondering about bulk DEF as well. I'll have to keep looking for that. If I find a place, i'll let you know. None I've found thus far.
