Hello.
New member here
I have a 92 f150 with a tired 5.8
I'm wondering what's involved with swapping a newer roller cam 5.8 into my truck. I've found a couple used motors (94-95) in my area but no 92 or 93 motors yet. Is there any major complications? I'm guessing some of the components don't interchange.
I have the mechanical ability, just not sure about the electrical, computer, etc. I'm also hoping to not get too deep into this as far as time and $$.
Any info is appreciated
thanks
thanks
But does this mean: if I strip down to the long block I have to change the dist gear as I reinstall all the original 92 components?
Do I assume from this the newer engine not a straight swap as a complete runner?
Yes on the distributor gear, roller cam and flat tappet cam have a different gear metal makeup so iron for one for iron tappet cam and steel for steel roller cam.
As complete runner some plugs maybe different but not sure on this one the best and safest way is to use your harness on your truck the injectors and rail should all work along with waterpump.
I've read about the dist gear on a bunch of threads but no one mentioned if that's an easy part to get from a parts store or ??
Or can I just keep the whole distributor that comes with the used newer engine. Most of the threads I've read were people putting roller blocks under their original top end. Which then makes sense that the gear would need to be replaced.
I'm looking at an entire running roller engine
Well if the distributor that comes with the engine has the same plug as your harness then I would say you are golden and if not well use the gear on that distributor with your distributor.
This is a direct swap except for 2 things..
1) you cannot use any wiring that comes with the donor motor so you will be removing the upper intakes on both motor and disconnecting the wiring right at all sensors, injectors, solenoids, etc.
2) and as already mentioned you may have a minor distributor issue to handle. If your truck has a remote TFI module then you can use the distributor in the new motor, but if the truck has the module on the side of the distributor then you must use that dizzy with the new motor and that means the drive gear must change.
