I've been reading some of the F-650 lower panel and other interior threads, and have seen guys talk about painting interior pieces. How does that work? Do you need a special paint or prep work? How well does it hold up?
I'm thinking this could be pretty cool if you wanted to customize the dash but I'd be nervous to try it.
You want to use SEM products. They have factory matched colors for the interior trim
In my experience it was minor prep. A VERY light sand, good cleaning, primer, spray final color.
I changed my whole interior from Beige to black and one of the items painted were the grab handles on the A-pillar which obviously got a lot of use.
The paint started to rub off after almost 2 years. In my books it worked out great considering the investment in paint was about $40 and involved minimal work.
Keep in mind this was the grab handle and was regularly being manhandled

When I swapped out the interior of my truck with new pieces, I decided to paint it a brighter color. I first thoroughly cleaned each piece with TSP (Tri-sodium Phosphate) and a scrubbing sponge and rinsed it off with water. After it dried, I wiped the whole thing down with wax and grease remover/paint prep solvent. Once that dried, I used dupli color plastic primer, followed by some dupli color "Vinyl and Fabric" paint, which is meant for plastic interior parts:
