o2 sensor

When do I know if my o2 sensor is going bad? I am replacing plugs/wires on my 94 3.0 (60K miles) aerostar tomorrow. When I bought the parts I asked the guy how long I could expect the plugs to last (autolite platinum). He said that depended a lot on the o2 sensor, because if it goes bad it will cause the plugs to go bad earlier. My question is: while i am in there should I change out the o2 sensor? If it goes bad, will my check engine light go on?

Thanks

o2 sensor

The O2 sensor just provides data for the EEC as to whether the fuel mixture is correct. A failing O2 sensor causes the mixture to run rich. While this affects your mileage it has little or no affect on the plug life. Unless the sensor completely fails you will not see a 'Check Engine' light. OEM sensors usually last for 100,000 miles but such longevity is predicated on the engine having received proper maintenance all along. If you suspect this was not the case, then a sensor change may be indicated.
