Replaced the o2 sensor on my 93 today and of course nothing can go as it should. Sensor broke when i had it nearly out and messed up the threads. Got all of the shards out of the threads and its bad enough i cant get the new one in. Tried to tap it but no luck. Suggestions? Ive thought previously about putting a o2 simulator in it but is it worth it? Any ideas are appreciated!
honestly i would suggest cutting the section of pipe.. drilling your new hole or buying the pipe pre drilled for the o2 sensor hole and have it bent to what you need then weld it back.. you don't want a leak right from the start of installing a new o2.. some people here may say otherwise but that is how i would go at it
Simulators only work in place of down stream O2 sensors (after cat converter) if you have only one (as I suspect you do) you will need to get it back in there.. Personally I would try the tap again.. Just go slow and easy, in a little, back it out, in a little, back it out..
It may take some time, but it will be your cheapest way..
Depends on how good you are with metal yourself. I've not got the tools or the knowledge.
I ran into a similar situation a few years ago. I forget which, but either Meineke or Midas is actually bunch of indy locations. They cut it out, drilled a new piece for a bung, put the sensor in. Between labor and 6in of pipe I think I paid $55.
Have the same problem with my 92 stripped out the treads now the o2 dangles and major exhaust leak Option 1. I found on a post here on FTE the size is 18MM for a replacement bung I found on amazon.com. I think this is our best bet being how large I made my o2 bung, the new one just gets welded in place... Option 2 find a 18MM heliCoil (i cant find one that big at the local diys stores) So I will keep a eye here see what all comes up!
Had same problem with my 94 used one and it worked like a charm, cleaned the threads right up.
Take your time with it don't force it, getting it started right is all important. Be sure and flush it with something like liquid wrench, WD-40 etc now and then while turning it clearing those threads.
