6.0 Intake "thunk"

I'm looking at maybe trading for a 2004 F350 with a studded and deleted 6.0. It has a "thumping" sound coming through the intake like an exhaust valve is staying closed. My question is, how common is it for the rocker arm retainer or rocker itself to fail? It has 204k miles, and the owner says he was on his way home about 2 weeks ago and it just started doing it.

Not common but they can have valvetrain issues.........I would not buy it unless the price was right, as in really "right", it's an early build so you have the HPOP not in your favor.

The hpop was replaced 20k miles ago. He wants to trade for my r-titled 2000 7.3 f250

John, it could be a bad lifter, bent or broken pushrod, rocker arm problems just to name a few. A bad lifter could get expensive. I would carry it to a reputable shop and have them check it out before I bought it.
