A Different Pushrod Question

I just pulled off my driver's side valve cover and found the intake push rod of cyl. # 5 was missing. After reaching it with a long magnet and finessing it out of the intake valley, I am ready to reinstall, but why did it come out of there in the first place? I have heard that this is common for 400's, but am wondering why? The lifter is still there and in it's proper place. What do I need to do to keep this rod in place?

A Different Pushrod Question

It is not common for the 400 any more than for any other engine, which is not "common" at all.

Check the pushrod to make sure it's not bent. If it is, that's why it came out.

The only other possibilities would be something that allowed too much lash (clearance) in the valve train:

1. Loose hold-down bolt (or nut) on the rocker arm

2. Worn out rocker arm and fulcrum

3. Collapsed lifter

If the pushrod is bent, you need to figure out how it got bent to keep it from happening again.

Excess lash can bend the pushrod because it allows the pushrod to move from its proper position in the lifter and rocker arm. Otherwise, valve spring coil bind is the most likely cause of a bent pushrod. (Binding in a worn out rocker arm fulcrum is remotely possible, but pretty unlikely).
