It gurgles and gurgles as the level slowly falls back down this port for the next 30 min.

I could **** more flow than this. I then removed the checkball on top of engine and Inspected. Looked normal to me but what do I know. Beside from what I understand its open during operation anyways and primarly used for antidrainback of the res while sitting but it was right there so why not inspect.

I drained the oil hoping to use my bore scope through the oil pan plug to confirm the pickup is still on but couldnt see a thing.

I was able to remove filter and manually get a pick in the valve in the housing and it moved freely somewhat but without knowing how much it should move Idk,

Got cold and dark and going to rain for three days so I pulled the block heater and let the coolent out. It will be all drained and ready for me in a few days when I have time to pull cooler to inspect the valve in the backside of the filter housing.

after checking out the picture of the check valve I noticed that the spring is bent, I checked out mine out earlier a sure enough the thing is all warped like in your pic. I have a spare 7.3 block so I took the check valve out and look how its suposed to be

To the left the "new" check valve.
To the right the one in my engine.
I tried starting my truck up with the HPOP reservoir plug remove and no oil came out while cranking, I took a quart of oil out and refilled the HPOP with new oil put the plug back on, cranked it and it started righ up and stayed running like it always has. Ill check it in the AM. And see if the HPOP drains again.

Adam, where exactly is that check valve/ball from? Is that the one that comes out of the side of the HPOP opposite the STC outlets?

Looking the engine from the front it's on the right side of the HPOP on the block right below the STC fittings.

Do you need to have the HPOP out to access the plug with the spring and ball below it? Perhaps just the HPOP hoses need to be disconnected? Is there an allen key hole at the top of the plug?

Nope, I left everything alone, its a pain in the butt to get the threads started, but if you remove the oil temp sensor it could make it easier, I opted not to remove anything.

Sorry for the thread highjack OP.
started the truck this morning and same chit, started then it died, so this valve didn't affect the HPOP to drain, next up is going to be the LOPP even though its a brand new Melling.

Is the reservoir draining all the way or just part way?

All the way down. I took off the HPOP resevoir bolt and started the truck up and no oil came out when I cranked the engine over. So that leaves the LPOP or the oil cooler end cap check valve. I know it's not the pick up tube, I lifted her *** up same scenario it's only when cold or first start of the day, once warmed up she runs great, no HPOP drain in a span of 8-10 hours.

Man I wouldn't see how. The only reasons I know from looking at the system is that check ball you pulled, check valves in the oil cooler, and front cover on the engine itself. Lemme see if I can find that diagram.
