So you had to drill to install mounting brackets? Would a radio install kit (metra or equivelent) solve the need to do this? I cringe if some metal shavings got inside and shorted out a board!
Also looks like a perfect fit in the dash opening? No need to trim the dash (I have a 2006 that looks similar to yours)?
I may be the first to ask but I bet not the last. Do you have a link to the place you got
your head unit from or the manufacture? I think it would be nice to not have to root
the silly thing when you first install it. The Pioneer I have is starting to act up. As I
understand it the OS is Windows imbedded and is not too hard to mess with. BUT I just
want some thing that works and keeps working.

You have to root any android to be able to do the fun stuff.

I have a 2006 with electric 4wd switch. Not sure on the radio install kits. You need to secure the body of the unit to the dash. Easiest way is to take off your dress and drill some holes. If metal shavings are your concern, drill it upside down using gravity as your friend. I did not have to modify the dash, it was a perfect fit.
I see that it uses card slots on the face for the GPS and a SD data slot. How does that work?
One way to deal with any head unit that you do have to drill would be to also in addition
to the upside down trick. Use a vacuum cleaner crevice nozzle and suck the chips away.
You might also want to add a drill stop to the bit so you don't go in to far if your not a steady
holder when it comes to drilling holes in thin sheet metal.
I know thins is not really the place but How do you root the head unit? I have never fiddled
with any thing android and with the Pioneer being such a pig I am ready to start looking
for something new to put in it's place. I am spoiled with the iPhone input and the hands free.
I bet I could count on my finger the number of times I have used the GPS un it because the
maps SUCK. Now back up camera I use every time I drive and I al in the process of adding
a forward camera so I don't crush the little car I pull up to when parking or whack the front
bumper on a pole when pulling into a spot with a pole. BYW that is more of a concern than
crushing the little car. Little car can fend for it's self or not. Just like a crushed beer can, FLAT.
That is a very nice fit indeed! What are these "fun stuff" you speak of that can't be done without rooting? I seem to be able to do anything I can or do, do on my phone. Maybe I am just not geeky enough to know these things.
Not sure if I'm following you there partner. You hate to say ferd isn't the best?
More like I hate to say government motors has the best tuner. I think Ford and Chrysler are about the same.
That's comparing my wife's '14 Platinum Escape and my '14 Ram C/V van.
I installed this one in my 2004 EX Limited. It required no mounts and just slid right in tightly. A Metra Ford side wiring adapter was used. It required no other adapters as the head unit is programmable for the steering controls. Works fine and has 5.1 android loaded with 2 gig ram. I connect it to the internet via Hotspot on my phone. Google nav or the installed IGO nav works fine. Backup and dash cams and the OBDII devices from Joying are being used as well.
I bought the similar 2gb joying unit w/o the *****. Had a few questions regarding installing if you could share your experience:
1. Sounds like you got steering wheel controls to work w/o having to buy a separate adapter and just the programmable interface in the radio? Did you connect key 1 or key2 to the Steering wheel wire in the factory harness?
2. Did you connect the dimmer wire from the radio to the illum wire in the factory ford radio harness?
3. Where did you tap in for reverse, brake, and amp trigger?
Paid to have it installed by a local guy. I was going on a trip and I didn't have the time and he was quick and not to expensive. $150. He came in on a special Saturday appt just for me. Sorry I can't answer your questions.
Is there anyway to monitor data with an Iphone and a comparable app? I would guess only a head unit that has video can display data?

I believe there is a way to use something similar on iphone. It's Torque app but you can also buy a cheap Android tablet and mount it to use it like this. I have a backup Android phone that I use.
Dash Command is what I think you need on iPhone maybe someone here can chime in and help on how to use it and if it's comparable
This looks like an interesting option to mount a tablet in the CD slot. You can adjust it to sit above the CD slot so it's easily viewable and still gives access to your radio.
Amicus, ForScan Lite is probably the most popular App for the iPhone/iPad. Go ahead and get the Bluetooth/Wireless Dongle $20.00 to $30.00 Amazon. ForScan is free for Windows and cost about $5.00 for the App on iPhone/iPad.
