I have a 2013 F-250 6.2L with 3.73 with locking dif......
1 - What rear axle is in my truck?
2 - Has anyone put 4.56 gears in? Would it be worth doing to pull 15,000#?
3 - I assume I can have the truck recalibrated for 4.30 gears but are the trucks able to be recalibrated with non stock gear package? With my Jeep I was able to recalibrate from 3.21 to 4.56 and I would want the transmission to know what gear it is turning.
I plan on re-gearing the truck I am just not sure what gear I want to go with. An knowledge on the matter will be helpful. I feel I got a great price on the truck and don't mind spending the money to have a better tow experience (although I don't mind the 3.73)
I'm not sure if you can get higher than 4.30 gears as of yet. Most likely by now you can but when I changed my 2011 from 3.73 to 4.30 that was all I had the option for. No need to recalibrate anything you just have the gears swapped and drive away. Speedo doesn't change or anything. Shifts much nicer now that it is running at a slightly higher rpm too.
You don't have to do anything to correct for gearing, only tire size. The computer uses the speed sensor and tone ring that's bolted to the ring gear to determine speed. Tires size is the only thing that will effect this. I would definitely recommend a lower gear for pulling 15k, especially if your running anything bigger than the dinky 245/75r17's. My plans are to go 4.88's. This will get me geared slightly lower with 35's or slightly higher with 37's, than a factory 4.30 truck with 245/75r17's. Which just happens to be what my dad has, and I love driving it.
