Black Beauty has developed a problem. She is having a hard time starting. Normally I just hop in and turn the key and she starts right up. Now she cranks and cranks. I have to give her some gas and then try again. She is a 2000 V-10. We were planning to tow the trailer to the lake for New Year's but that' not going to happen.
Hard/no cold starts and trouble idling when cold can also be a dirty or faulty Idle Air Control valve. The IAC is mounted to the rear of the throttle body and can usually be pulled and cleaned with carb cleaner and put back in service.

When the throttle control pedal is depressed I don't think any gas is actually given to engines with fuel injection these days.
With carburetors the accelerator pump would squirt a bit of gas when pushed.
About the only things that move with the throttle pedal is the butterfly in the throttle body and the TPS sensor.
I would check for fuel pressure before messing with the IAC.
If there is no fuel pressure, check for fuel pump power (relay & inertia switch) before changing the pump.
If the gauge panel looks normal the PCM relay is probably good.
The PCM controls the fuel pump relay.

Reason: If it cranks the neutral/safety switch is good.
If it cranks without any indication of firing, try spraying some starting fluid in. IF it fires, even for a bit, it is most likely the fuel pump. Check the fuse with a meter before replacing the pump. Hopefully you have not just filled up if you need to change the pump otherwise you will get to see just how much fuel these beasts hold.

If it fires it is most likely a fuel supply problem - fuse, relay, inertia switch, filter, pump.
The fuel pump relays go bad a lot, too.
Checking for 12v on the output side of the inertia switch will help isolate an electrical issue.
For testing you can jumper the output lead of the inertia switch (PK/BK) direct to the battery (20A fuse) to see if the fuel pump turns and the engine should start.
IAC valve. It's an easy fast thing to check and you can rule it out fast. Before that though I would do the carb cleaner trick with the intake pulled off and someone cranking it while you sprayed. If it starts then stop spraying. You know it's a fuel issue at that point.
Does it start and run on the second try? If so it may be a bad fuel pump check valve letting all the fuel drain back to the tank. If Thai is the problem, turn the key to on for 5 seconds then off, then back on for 5 seconds and then try starting it. If it starts then you have a bad fuel pump. If not then it is a problem on the engine control side.
Thanks everyone for the ideas. We are going to take her to the dealer this Thursday. We had planned to go camping over New Year's but the Ex is the tow vehicle so that won't happen! I really love winter camping too, rats.
Thanks for all the ideas. We just got her back from the dealer. They say she is fixed, she is not. Does anyone know where I can locate pictures of this IAC valve? I am going camping this weekend and she is going to tow that trailer!

Curious, what did the dealer "fix" if it is having the same issues?
