I drive.... I ride a motorcycle, ride a bicycle. drove a 24 foot stake truck for a few years. I enjoy operating a machine. even a lawn tractor...
50 years worth... ok 60 on the bicycles.

self-driving cars/trucks are for people that will not walk 100 feet.

my opinion.

I hate the whole idea of self driving anything. I think it's a STUPID idea. Self driving cars are for lazy people who dont or cant boil water. if you want to be lazy than ride the bus. and stay out of my way.

I've seen hundreds of self driving cars & a few SUV's on the streets & highways of Pittsburgh & the surrounding areas. Uber is behind them, they have a few different garages in town where they work on them. I'm sure trucks can't be far behind.

There will be a lot of limitations to overcome before it becomes a way of life. It will be like autopilot on an airplane.

I welcome self driving cars for the lazy idiots who think driving is a chore or don't take it serious enough and drive distracted because they are bored driving a 3,000lb missile. After nearly being killed 1.5 years ago on my motorcycle which I am still recovering from to regain the use of my arm, i'd rather have has many idiots no longer behind the wheel as possible.

Commercial applications will be a driving (ha ha) force in this development. Taxi drivers have a poor reputation in my city, so robot taxis would be popular. Long haul trucking is currently limited by drivers endurance more than any other factor. I actually predict that we will see some version of a road train with automated truck-truck communication allowing very tight spacing and incredible fuel economy.

For personal vehicles, the costs of this technology will delay it's adoption.

In commercial vehicle applications the driver will still need to maintain physical control of the vehicle. I might be it in my career spans. Maybe.

Snow, rain, fog, flat tire, mech break down, etc never going to catch me in one. Can't wait to see 4 self driving cars meet at a 4-way stop or traffic circle.

Self driving cars are a joke. What if there is road construction and they move the lanes and its not on google maps.
As far as what Youdontknowme said a self driving car may not have seen you or had time to react to where you were on the road. Bicyclist are complaining about them cutting them off on city streets in San Francisco but they bitch about everything. Do you trust something going down the road at 65 MPH and not hit anything. This may be ok in the Outback of Australia but in the U.S. its a stupid idea on its face.
I also don't like the idea of my car telling me how fast to go or which lane to be in how close to follow. All this technology may sound good but it's taking our freedom away and the car will be telling you where and how to drive by not letting you be in control. As this evolves you will not be able to turn this crap off. Look at the junk on the roof. How aerodynamic is it anyway. Would you like that on a Mustang. It's more government involvement in our lives. This will not stop people from dying on roads. Have you ever had a power anything fail on any car you own and you are going to trust you car to get you there safe every time.
Self driving cars are stupid idea.
