What are people's experiences with the rain-sensing wipers? It seems to me that all settings have the same sensitivity. I would expect the lowest setting to allow some moisture to accumulate. I know that if the rain is heavy the wipers will move faster, and the ability to move faster seems to be limited by the switch, however the manual states the switch is for sensitivity and a low sensitivity "will allow more moisture to be present on the windshield." I've wondered if the sensitivity was adjusted correctly since the second day I owned it, so it isn't that it's "dirty" I don't think.
I'm kinda in the middle here, it dose work and yes there is a delay but the difference isn't much between min and max! They need to increase the difference between min and max and it doesn't always behave properly to snow, there are some flaws but it doesn't stop me from using it
The rain sensor is just an infrared bulb the size of the one in your TV remote located at the top of the windshield. It's kind of a novelty because yes, the wipers can start and stop themselves automatically. However, the standard variable intermittent settings can pretty much control the wipers better. Fortunately, Ford allows you to completely disable rain sense and just use the variable intermittent if you prefer.
That said, I had automatic rain sensing wipers on my 2002 E320 and they worked considerably better.
its been raining here in SoCal for a couple days and i was just talking about this with my wife yesterday.
To me the auto wipers are a bit of a waste of money. I would rather Ford invest their resources into improving camera quality or sound quality in the radio. Does it work? Yes it does, but how hard is it to work the wipes manually like we all have been doing for years. Seems more of a lazy man's novelty and less of a drivers assisted technology like the adaptive cruise control or the 360 cameras.
Thanks for the input, folks. It sounds like everyone is in agreement that the setting is really just for the delay in how often the wipers move and not a change in sensitivity.
I may wind up turning it off then. I don't mind having a few little tiny drops here and there and I don't need the window wiped. The feature definitely works I've come out of rain and driven another hour before realizing I left the wipers on because they never came on again.
