I have an'89 F-150 with a 5.8 ltr. It has the two tanks, with the switch on the dash. My problem is that when I fill the truck up with gas, the forward tank cuts out, causing me to have to flip to the back tank for a while. I have to do this several times (20 or more) before the tank will actually start running until empty. I have had the cap tested for venting, I've also tried not filling the tank completely, but still no luck. I don't understand how this mechanism works enough to troubleshoot it. Any help would be appreciated.
Try changing the dash switch. My '90 did the same thing. There are 2 sets of contacts in the switch, 1 for the gauges and 1 for the fuel pumps in the tanks. About $25 at the Ford dealer. I'm taking mine in next week for the recall on the duel tanks refilling into each other problem. Gary
Thanks for the advice. I'll give this a shot. It's funny you mention this setup, because the tank that "does" work correctly actually has a broken gauge. I wonder if the two problems could be related? I'll give it a shot.
WHen I looked up the recalls for my '93, it listed a twin-tank recall notice that might extend back to your year of truck. You might want to make sure the problem isn't with what all got recalled.
Sorry to jump in the middle of this but is there a way I can tell if my truck has that problem and if there is a particular recall for my truck? 93' F150 5.8L ExCAB Vin 1FTEX14H1PKB23005
In answer to the recall lookup, if you're looking at the same Ford-Trucks web-page I am then there's a "Recalls/TSB's" link in blue inside the right-hand longitudinal menu. Go hog wild - they're all there for (I guess) every vehicle.
No problem. I figured it was better to show ya how to fish than to just give you an anchovie.
I'm probably going to contact the local Ford dealership within the next week or two and tell them I'm brinign my truck in for Recall inspection. Not sure what lines & excuses they'll give me, nor what they'll try to charge me for, but I guess it needs checked out at least, no?
I just bought a 1990 F250 S/C 460 with Dual Tanks (probably obvious with a 460 ha ha). The previous owner did tell me he has replaced the dual tank switch (on the dash) 3 times because it would cause the truck to die when the tanks were switched? During my test drive it seemed to work ok, but after I bought it I have seen the same problem. Is this just a defective switch on the dash board or another problem downstream of the switch?
I just printed out the recalls for this truck and none of them mention a defective switch. What are the odds of this truck having now at least 4 defective switches?? Anyway the latest recall dated 7/19/2001 expires for my truck in one week! I will get it in this week!
Thanks for any insight you all may bring to this issue.
