89 Bronco 5.0 liter will not crank. All lights & accessories work fine but when you turn the keyswitch to start, no crank, no noise, nothing. Lights do not dim in start position. The radio will go off in the start keyswitch position so I would tend to believe that the ignition switch is ok. Car will start & run fine by jumping the starter relay. Starter relay appears in good shape. The problem started when I blew a seal in the transmission and tore up the torque converter and immediately thought the neutral safety switch could be the problem, but the person who worked on my tranny said it was fine and even tried a new safety switch to no avail. I assume I have covered all bases except the wiring in the starter system and probably will need to get someone check the wiring due to my lack of electrical ability. Could I have missed something else besides the wiring? I see where one person had a similar problem with the key cylinder but I tended to rule that out with the radio/ignition switch check listed above. Thanks for any input anyone may have.
Jumper point #3 to point #5. If it will crank, then your starter relay is good.
If your starter relay checks good, then it has to be the red/lightblue wire at point #5 is not getting voltage. It does come from the neutral safety switch, and even though the switch has been replaced, there could be a wiring problem. You should have a red/lightblue coming out of the ignition switch. This is what feeds the neutral start switch. Get a test light and probe the wires to see where you are losing it.
Thanks for the reply.
I agree that the relay is good. My first contention was something to do with the neutral safety switch due to the fact the problem happened with the transmission failure.
I have followed the red/light blue striped wire from the ignition switch to the transmission to the relay to check for chafing or a broken wire and didn't see any problems. Will check the wiring tonight at all junctures for continuity and voltage.
