Well my 1979 F-100 (inline 6) finally would not start. A quick tour on this site and some basic tests and it appears the brain box is dead.
I know what ignition module I need but was looking for recommendations on what brand to buy (or to stay away from). I figured someone has seen the good, the bad and the ugly and can save me the lesson.
Ford Motorcraft yes...chinee cheap part no. If you can get one good one..get 2. Glove box spare. Hang on there will be some Ford part guru's chiming in with all the locations and ph#'s for you.

Module is identified by a colored plastic square, above where the wires feed out.
What color is yours?
1979 could have a blue or red or yellow or brown plastic square.
Also, be aware that the stator (aka magnetic pickup coil) inside the dizzy could be bad, as the symptoms are the same as a failing DuraSpark module.
As mentioned, domestic is usually better than imports. Motorcraft is good.
Always carry a spare. They are temperature sensitive. Try to keep them as cool as possible. If you do an aftermarket, you could try O'Reilly. They had a lifetime warranty in the past.
As stated, motorcraft is and always will be best. That being said, the only other brand I've found that hold out is O'Reilly's house brand MasterPro. I've tried the BWD boxes from Advance Auto Parts, the Standard brand boxes from Napa, the El Cheapo no namers from Rock auto and other sources....Long story short they all died within roughly a month or two. My old '78 I no longer have burned through those things all day long even though the whole ignition system was new with good factory components. My current '77 has gone through two, but the MasterPro seems to be holding out for now.
