Possible Cracked Flex Plate, Re-do Transmission too?
Hi fellow brethren!
Just wanted some quick advice. I have, what I think to be, a cracked flex plate issue, I am probably going to take it to a shop in the new year for replacement as I really don't feel comfortable, nor necessarily have the time to attempt to fix in my driveway.
My question is would it be worth my while having them go through the transmission while it is out of the truck? Most of the cost for the flex plate replacement is going to be labor to pull and reinstall the transmission and transfer case, so I figured it may save some money overall?
The transmission itself seems to be fine, no issues shifting or the TC locking up, as best as I can tell, but it has (as far as I know) just over 200,000 miles on it. Just wondering if it worth the extra cost now or just leave it be for the time being?
I would rebuild it if confirmed the trans has to be removed. Billet converter, trans go tugger kit, updated friction/steels. Can't expect it to go much more than 200k.
Ok, I just spoke with a local transmission shop, who have a good reputation, and they have quoted $2,600 ish to replace the flex plate and rebuild the transmission. Does that seem to be a fair price? 3 day turn around.
I asked for some specifics, they mentioned that they replace the current 4 planetary gear system with a 6 planetary gear system, do the rear main seal, use a billet converter (only thing they install on their rebuilds), install an in-house built tugger kit, and replace the "soft packs" they either buy a raybestos kit or I can upgrade (about $200) to one piece (or two-sided) frictions that have a metal and friction (blue?) side instead of having separate plates, which means they can get more in there, which they are saying is better?
To be honest, a lot of this is foreign to me, so I have no idea if I should have asked more questions or if I may have forgotten some of what they have told me.....
I would just go with what they're familiar with for your intended use. I did the same locally and was a very similar price. The shop says the trans is a good one and a simple build works very well. My shop machined the pump surface to ensure no leaks as well. Not sure if they all do. Towed hard last year and have had zero troubles in 2 years. Get the dorman 6.0 trans cooler installed too. Fits right and keeps temps cool.
In a similar situation. Have a grinding, rattle in park and neutral. Goes away under load. Started after a -20 degree cold start. Seems to be getting louder as time goes on. Not sure which way to go. Order a flexplate and pull tranny? Seen written about a coast gear. My teuck has never coasted real well. Seems to slow down considerably after let off of throttle. 140k miles. Any ideas?
