Oem fe 76 cap is small, all V8's 77 &up use the lager cap with matching rotor that mounts on top of the tower housing. Both you can buy at your loco parts store. But the cap with brass contacts.
Also you'll need the later spark plug wires to fit the larger cap.
I think, I ordered the 77 460 wire set
Orich
awesome, thanks! Is the dizzy the same from 76 to 77? Or does the mounting change for the different cap?
What year super duty, I'm guessing you're referring to the big *** 2000+ Fords? I ordered a coil from an 87 Ford V8, so I'm thinking that's an e-core.

I just noticed the 77+ Fords are not FE's what distributor should I buy from these years that will still fit my engine? Sounds like the dizzy might have different mounting holes for cap?
Fe motors did have a DS in them. You can order the dizzy, adapter cap qnd rotor for 351/400 and 460. I can look up NAPA part numbers later tonight if you want. Not sure I'd have time today at work.

Edited: I found some adapters that I think will work. I'll go ahead and buy the 76 dizzy and use these adapters to use the big cap.
If the E-core type coil is to be used, I'd then use the supper duty 8.5 spark plug wires.

I guess, I should have said Heavy Duty plug wires of 8.5 minimum for the 460/400 big block motors.
Did not mean to confuse your thinking, I meant a Supper duty truck models.
Their was a guy on here who remove all the inners from a Duraspark ll box an mounted a GM HEI inside it. It made the whole setup look the like an oem setup.
I was going to do that GM HEI in the module box if and when my oem ford Duraspark ll craps out, then I'll remove the guts in put in the GM Hei unit plus it looks some much better in stead of it all out in the open. looks pretty red neck all open.

I had the module on order to gut it out, but changed my mind. I just want to get this done!
I'm going to post all the part numbers for this project when I'm done. I'm finding some to be out of date.

Awesome.
I ordered the Ford Performance 9mm set.
Another question. My dizzy currently installed doesn't have a vacuum advance, but the unit I ordered does. Is this a big deal? I was just going to run vacuum to it and call it good.

Hook it to the Carb for timed vacuum, The vacuum can can be adjusted inside the hose nipple 1/8"? Allen wrench they can be adjusted if needed.

Ford never changed the size or the mounting (except the EEC-III) of the Dizzy or cap. The big two piece cap will fit right on Duraspark and points style Dizzys. FEs took there own Dizzy. A 460 one won't fit a FE. The caps will interchange though. The upper half of the two piece cap with the brass terminals has an application of a 1995 Mustang 302 if you want to give one to a Parts Store.. Ford part number was F5ZZ12106AA. Discontinued but still out there. The E-Core coil part number is F7PZ12029AA (replaced E73Z12029A). Still available from Ford. The pigtail for it was 3U2Z14S411CFA (WPT-397). Discontinued.
Personally I recommend the Summit Racing billet distributor, some new Ford Racing wires and an MSD coil. Easy, plug n play and looks great with tons of performance and compatible with fuel injection if you ever go that route. Here's some pics of my distributor from Summit and the wires

What ignition module does that use? Looks like a GM wire connector on it.

All the wiring comes with the distributor wired and ready to go. I honestly think MSD makes them and they are re-branded with a black cap. Replacement cap is the same as MSD and the Summit distributor is less then half the price. I don't remember, but i think you just wire it to the coil + and ground it. Not 100% on that. I can't find any new picture, but there is the connector that I circled in red. This was from when I first installed it. I don't recall the modal either lol.. I'm not very informative right now
Sounds like it does take some kind of module. Note the last sentence. Summit Racing® Billet Distributors SUM-850083
