Self Driving Car Rant
Not so much the idea of a self driver -- it could be nice a lot of the time, just some of the things in the news.
Uber is running some in San Francisco and they claim that they don't need a permit as required by the law in CA. (They don't really seem to like any kind of regulations). Anyway, some newsies are whining about how it's a shame to restrict progress with regulations.
All that they require is a permit -- and it comes with a few strings-- such as you have to report all your accidents. Impeding progress nothing.
Not so Michigan which is apparently going to let self drivers go with few actual restrictions -- they will even allow driverless Uber style vehicles come and pick you up. I'd be nervous. I hope that Michigan's self proclaimed vision for the future doesn't end up a bloody mess.
One final iten that got to me, was an article about how meatbags ( people) had trouble taking control when the vehicle would decide to hand it over at highway speeds. They snottily said that folks had trouble adjusting to the steering etc. Well duh, the car just says ' here you go' when it can't handle something at 70 mph -- good job.
All in all I guess we'll probably get to self drivers at some point. I just think that it's going to be a lot messier then what seems to be expected. As far as I know, only Ford has shown a car driven in the snow -- and that used pre recorded map data. So, the weather is bound to be a factor.
Then too all of these radars and lidars are bound to interfere with each other -- they just don't have enough of them out there for it to be an issue yet.
And, of course, there's the vehicle to vehicle comm -- coming soon to all cars near you. Grand idea, all the self drivers within a fairly small area will be telling each other what's going on. Except that signals will be dropping in and out due to distance, obstacles, etc. So, there will probably be more errors than actual comm. Somehow I think that there expectations are way too high in this area as well.
I'd just as soon be wrong about this.
