Seems to me consumers should have a choice. I really don't like this at all.

That does border on the ridiculous.

On one hand, it would be nice for police to be able to sort out what the driver/car actually did during and before a crash. It would eliminate the "your word versus the other driver" situation.

However, I think you'll find that police cannot download the data to prosecute you while you're driving (at least in the US). They'd need either probable cause (say an auto accident/observing you speeding) or a warrant. Simply driving by a police officer (while not breaking any laws) does not provide either.

In the end, it's just one more "safety" device that will break after 6 months and cost thousands to fix.

So what happens when someone like myself, who doesn't like people being able to see what I'm doing and when I'm doing it, locates and destroys said device??? Will they get mad at me and throw a tantrum, fine me, or what???

Lot's of cars already have this feature, they just don't advertise it. Remember back when Toyota's where taking off by themselves and Toyota was busy "analyzing crash data"? The difference will be the stuff now is mostly manufacturer specific code that only they can read. The feds want access so they can read the data too.

Who knows how many vehicles already do some of this now anyway. At least they'll be up front about it now. I know when Ford came out with the sick.0 the regional Ford guy had a special laptop that they would come and hook up to the PCM to determine if the truck had ever been chipped.

I think I'd have to pull it out and rewire some stuff.. See how long it takes them to catch me and do something about it. I don't see anything saying I can't do that???

I'm sure its got a internal battery and if you mess with it, it will set off a signal or kill the engine and 'they' will put you in jail. They will call it tax evasion or something. Travis, you'll go to jail to visit with Bubba and they will free your kitty, LOL. Good avatar!!

When I pulled the dash out of Whitey I found a mystery "black box" on the passenger side of the dash near the RABS module. If I had never pulled the dash I'd have never known it was there, and how many average people actually work on their own cars? I agree, its highly possible that they have been installing crap like this for years, which is fine. I don't think the fed has the right to tax anyone based on how they use their vehicle. Those who drive more already pay more taxes because of the fuel they buy. This is just another great Obummer scheme to screw the American people IMO. He's run the federal deficit up to the ceiling, now he has to find new ways to come up with money to spend on nonsense crap that does nobody any good and this is one of them.

Chase, IMHO, the 'he' your referring to is just one of several law makers screwing our eye ***** out. 'He' does what 'he' is told to do or else! Remember JFK?? The chief is a puppet, period. But that's OK, I run him down just like most do. They are fall guys that do what they are told to do. Like put something like this into effect! I'm really curious of what you found in whitey?? When you find out let us know for sure. I mean, I'll trucks are so OLD OLD OLD, it's like they are almost ancient history. LOL

Chase, are you talking about the little box on the pass side on the back w/ a white rect plug that says "do not drop" on it? It's in all of them, even the early OBS's. Like 92 models too. I don't know what it is either. It'd be good to know.
