I agree that the ground clearance can be a big issue, or may be a relatively small issue, depending on how you use your Expedition. Since Ford cannot really dictate how its customers are to use their Expeditions, Ford must make 'em able to handle anything. For me and many others, the minimal loss of ground clearance due to the dual exhaust corssover pipe is no big deal, but it could be to other folks.
From a practical standpoint, I bet there's hardly any CO buildup in the passenger compartment (from rear-exiting dual tips) with tailgate closed, even with a deteriorated rear tailgate seal. On the other hand, I am not quite yet willing to wager my wife's and my little girls' lives on the bet, at least not without some really good data showing CO measurements in the back seat while underway at 55mpg.
BTW, I noticed a new-gen (2002+) Explorer today and its stock exhaust exited straight back, underneath the left side of the rear bumper. Odd. Why no CO issue for that model? It's just a brick-like shape, plowing through the air much like the "Pig".

I just had mine done.
I agree, a dual would be almost impossible with the fuel tanks location. I opted to have a local shop install the 40 series (?) Flowmaster, and 3" single tail pipe out the side where the stock pipe was. It does sound sweet and looks good also.
They cut the stock muffler out about 3" forward and welded the new stuff in from there. Fits perfectly.
