Stay with the 6.2 or go with 6.7 diesel

Really not happy with the 6.2 pulling my Jayco 339FLQS, about 13000 lbs. Thought about going to 4.30 gears, but worried I still wouldn't be happy. Have a deal on a 2016 6.7 diesel, but have to pony up a chunk of money......decisions....decisions.

So you're asking in a 6.2 forum so there will be the obvious bias towards the 6.2. having said that....and as a 6.2 owner myself...I would say go for the 6.7. pulling at capacity plus the wind resistance of the camper it has to be working awful hard making it a stressful drive. if you have the change to pony up go for it.

6.2 and towing heavy = 4.30's.

A used 2016 6.7....I wonder if a new 2017 6.2 w/4.30's would cost similar? Mine was 40k.

When I left the world of diesel I knew I wanted to limit my loads to 12k and that is pretty easy to do for me. In my mind, for regular towing in excess of 12k, the diesel starts to get my nod.

I've never driven a 6.2 with 3.73 gears so I don't know what it pulls like but I have a driven V10 with 3.73 gears and when comparing it to my V10 with 4.30 it was like day and night. The last pulling truck I had with 3.73 gears was changed to 4.10s after the first long pull.

I've driven a 6.7 empty 300 miles with 3.73 gears (very important) and it was a power house. I've also traveled with other RVers with the 6.7 and they are happy with them but they don't run away from me when pulling, empty they would never catch me if I didn't want them to.

In the end its up to you and what you expect when pulling and how much you want to spend, I don't consider pulling a race so maybe I'm a little easier to please.

For 13,000 I'd go diesel, depending on how often you tow? where you tow? and if you have the extra $ laying around for the more expensive truck.

Do you like doing your own maintenance? New Diesel maintenance is very important and can be expensive at the dealer, factor that into your cost.

That torque tho!

If you're towing 13K regularly then it's worth the expense and hassle of upgrading to the diesel in my opinion. If you only occasionally tow then it's worth the convenience of the 6.2, unless of course you really want the extra power and just need an excuse

I'm towing my signature rig 12,000 lbs, manual tow mode and shifting like a manual is the only way for me. In city traffic automatic is fine. Merging on the interstate and hilly roads...manual mode is the best.

I use a mixture of drive, manual and tow haul. Drive when cruising the interstate, manual when in the hills and sometimes one the flats just to hold it in gear when using cruise. This last trip is started using TH when on two lane because of all the small towns and the transmission braking, I'm still not crazy with some of the shift strategy but sometimes I'm to lazy to use manual.

There is no doubt the 6.7l is going to pull the trailer easier. Big difference in engines. I just get rid of the 6.7l truck before it is out of the drivetrain warranty.

Congrats! Post a picture!

Just remember, Ford doesn't recommend that you tow until there's 1K miles on it. Need that time to let the gears bed in...
