Stay with 6.2 gas or trade for 6.7 diesel?

Really not happy with the 6.2 pulling my Jayco 339FLQS, about 13000 lbs. Thought about going to 4.30 gears, but worried I still wouldn't be happy. Have a deal on a 2016 6.7 diesel, but have to pony up a chunk of money......decisions....decisions.

Are you going to tell us What you are not happy with?

Maybe tell us what 6.2 gas you have now, would also be helpful. Miles per year, Speeds you like to travel at, grades/slopes/mountains you travel over. Cargo weight you normally keep in the truck. Like that.

Here is my thought. It sounds to me like you have already made up your mind. What makes one person happy may make another one unhappy. Going diesel means more upfront and maintenance expenses. It sounds like your gasser is getting there, but not in the style that is right for you so the added expense may be worth it. It always boils down to how much happiness is worth. As I have said so many times in this forum, "I can always tell you why I make the decisions I make, but I can not tell anyone what is right for them".

It has to be a personal choice. In my minds eye, diesel is the way to go.

Simply because we travel cross country. It only makes sense.

So what truck are you looking at? Any info on that? Even that may not be the right choice.

13.000 pounds AND load and people?

diesel is a 10,000 dollar up charge.
most come ordered with the UP Top Trim level. 3-7K
4x4 is another 8,000 and up.
Dually?

as already stated. it appears you already answered your own question.

and 3:73.. not good for that weight.

Some of the added cost can be mitigated by doing your own maintenance and buying the filters, OEM only, online and getting the oil when there's a sale going.

And I was like you, had the 6.2/3.73 gears and was not really happy with it. Mine was a SRW, and I wanted a dually for the stability; but did not want to order one and have to wait. Well, long story made short....the only duallies I could find were all equipped with the 6.7 PSD. Night and day difference in towing experience!! And yup, one does have to pay to play!!

At 13K towing you are either right at or over the capacity of the 6.2, empty. Just as Chuck said you add stuff and people then you are definitely over. My 5er is just under 14k empty but with stuff and people I stay just under the 15.7K that the specs said I can do.
Just as any gasser fan will tell you the diesel costs more at the start and possibly long range but you can definitely haul what you have with no issues.
Decisions, Decisions...

If you end up buying the new truck, save a bunch by selling the 6.2 yourself. If you use it for a trade, you are GIVING it away.

I thought you were headed that way based on the wording in your first post. Enjoy!
