a couple of days ago i bought a 67 f100, i love the truck but its got a few problems that are stumping me, the previous owner said that it has a 289 in the truck is thier a sure fire way for an inexperinced person to tell this?
Hi and welcome to the site! Congratulations on your new truck, we can help you out with whatever it is. First off, count the number of valve cover bolts holding it on. This is assuming it has a Ford engine of course.
thank's for replying to my thread. i counted the bolts and on the right side of the engine it has 6 bolts and on the left it has 5 bolts it appears that the hole that would have been the 6th bolt on the left side was sheared off.
Hey, it does have a small block in it! I'd take the PO's word on the 289. If it had a 302, wouldn't he say so? Most of the parts are the same anyway so it doesn't really matter. What I'm curious about is small blocks weren't put in pickups until '70 so it's a swap. What kind of tranny you running?
i'm not really sure but by the looks of the diagram that i'm looking at of the pan it mostly resembles a c6, is that good or bad? the data plate on the door was'nt much good the part were it had the vin code for the tranny was unreadable. question for you though. the first start of the day or after leaving it shut off for awhile it starts on a dime. but after shutting it off for like getting gas or something it starts like a bear any good reason for this? thank you for any info you may have.

My truck does the same thing. It fires right up when it's cold but when I run it for awhile then shut it off it has a hard time starting. I know it's not the choke cuz I have a manual choke. My suspicion is that it's vapor locking. Check the fuel lines to see if they are hot and if they run too close to exhaust manifolds or any other heat sources.
C6 is good, very good... welcome to the Cuckoo's Nest.

Hmmm... a small block C6, that's entirely possible. There are three posibilities, a C4, C6 or a Cruise-O-Matic. If you don't mind, crawl under the truck again and look for a couple things. See if the bellhousing is a separate bolt-on piece or all part of the transmission case. Then see if the transmission case is made of aluminum or cast iron, if it's hard to tell take a magnet and see how it sticks to it compared to say the frame. That should identify it.
i'll get back to you all tomorrow, the truck is in the shop for an electrical problem, and new exhaust. but i'll check on the whole tranny thing then.thanks guys.

well i got the truck back today and the electrical problems are mostly fixed, and i also went ahead and got the dual exhaust put in today right behind each of the tires. so thats good and she sounds much better. i looked at the tranny again and am 98% positive that it is a c6 the pan pattern matches, bolt count is the same and it also has a one part bell housing made of aluminum. so i thank you all for the info that you gave me. one question that kinda goes with my rough second starts. the starter does not stay engaged the hole time i hold the key in the start position.it still turns but does not engage the flywheel. can i get some help in this area as well?
