hey guys i have 1991 bronco with a 5.8 and e4od, it sometimes shifts very hard, there is no slipage just very hard shifts. it can shift fine all day and then it will shift hard and then it might not do it for a few days or it might do it for a few shifts. i really cant aford a rebuild so im hopeing that it is something simple. can anyone give me any clue as to where to look to fix this problem. fluid is clean and red and it only has 115,000 easy miles on it .
not the fluyid but the bronco
thanks for any help and all is appreciated
Intermittent hard shifting can be a sign that something is starting to fail or there is some junk floating around that gets stuck in the valves every once in awhile. Also might be the computer boosting pump pressure to compensate for something going out(least that's what I have read).
You might try a complete fluid change including the torque converter. Sometimes this fixes it. Or you might try one of those power flushes at a tranny shop.
I am no tranny expert so you might need to talk with one or hope one of the guys has better answers.
Had the same problem with my '94 F150. Trouble code pointed to the MLPS. I replaced it with the upgraded '95 sensor and wiring connection kit. Fixed it right up. No more neck breaking shifts. Good luck....Van
hey van/tx
was the mpls hard to replace? was it a ford item only and how much did it cost? i will give this a try but it is hard to find the time . thanks for your reply
Sounds like you've got the same problem as me (94 5.0L E4OD). I've had the MLPS replaced, the speed sensor on the rear differential replaced, the ABS module replaced and no luck. I still get erratic hard shifts. It always seems OK first thing in the morning but on the way home after work it often starts to act up. It's at a local Ford shop again right now and I'm waiting to hear back from them. Have you pulled the engine codes? Are you getting a 452 code?
Ill be following this thread with big interest. My 97 F250 E4OD does the same thing,(SLAMS into gear, at a higher RPM too) just started doing it about a few months ago. I'm debating to pay to get the code read or buy a reader myself.
One thing I did notice, If I start the truck and let it idle without touching ANYTHING, for at least 30 secs the truck runs fine. If I start er up and go, it's almost guarenteed to shift like crap.
Code readers are fairly inexpensive - well worth it in my opinion. I still haven't driven around enough to be sure the problem is fixed. I'll write again when I'm confident it's fixed!

I had the same problem with my 92 F-250. I finally took into my local Ford dealer to have it fixed and it turned out to be the manual selector linkage sensor. When you shift it into gear there is a sensor on the side of the tranny that tells it what gear you have it in. It cost me $226. to have it fixed and I haven't had a problem since. It might be worth the cost of having a diagnostic check run on yours to see if it's the same thing. It was well worth it for me since I tow an 11000 pound travel trailer.
Well my truck goes into the shop Monday, I'm tired of this intermittant problem. Thanks for all the info and I'll let youns know what my problem was...
Good luck. Since they replaced my speedometer (PSOM) I have not had any of the problems I had before and I've been driving it around for a while now. It seems like in my case at least the 452 code (bad vehicle speed sensor signal) was as a result of a bad PSOM and this resulted in one confused transmission!
I'll be interested to hear what they say about your truck
check the little plastic gear on the tranny end of the speedometer cable. it sends the signal for the speed sensor. it took care of my initial problem. now the damn thing wont shift into 1 or 2 at all so im back to the code analizer. good luck
Well I had trouble understanding the message, but my problem points to a speed input / sensor located in the transfer case which needs replaced?, according to Ford shop. Estimate was $225. I'm going to get more details when I can talk to the tech., but for now I just told the counter to go ahead and order the parts I need.
The vehicle speed sensor on my '94 5.0L Bronco (E4OD transmission) is located on the rear differential. I'm not familiar with any sensor in the transfer case??
I'm completely baffled now, so I told the dealership just get it fixed. I also told them install the tricumulator springs and "sonnex" valve too to make it shift like a truck. We'll see.........TBC
