Replacing starter

Has anybody used an AC Delco starter? I know, kind of wrong, but Rock Auto has new ones, no Motorcraft showing.
And, it has been suggested before to use a three bolt, but mine, which has been replaced by previous owner, is two bolt. Will a three work?
Any other thoughts on which way to go appreciated.

Thanks.

I think my '01 could have accommodated a 2 or a 3 bolt starter - the dealer made a big deal out of which starter I needed, but it was drilled for both, as far as I could determine. If the Delco is 'new' - not reman, it might be ok. I'd be wary of any reman. for a 7.3.

I just replaced my starter on my 2002 F350. Went with a Napa 4N-9296. Its a 2 bolt hi torque gear reduction. I paid $235 for it and it came with a lifetime warranty. It turns my motor over like a a Honda civic!

Yeah, it's new, for 175. I'll look again, the other choices didn't stand out. I guess I could hide any markings so my truck doesn't get upset

The 3-bolt direct drive starter probably won't work out without swapping out longer battery and starter solenoid/relay (my '02 has starter relay). The 3 bolt units are twice the size and the starter solenoid is rotated a bit compared to the 2-bolt gear reduction ones.

Good luck

Here is a side by side view of the 2-bolt and the 30bolt. MCFord is correct in that the solenoid is clocked differently but in my 01 Excursion everything hooked up no problem. Best of luck to you! Let us know what you end up doing.

Why not repair your current starter. My problem was the solenoid on the starter was sticking and I replaced it with a new one from
Nations Starter & Alternator- Best Quality Starter & Alternator Supply! .

Give nations a call and talk with them.

Well, I am in Red Feather Lakes, Co. Everything up here happens with Fed-Ex or UPS or USPS. I am not in a good position to have truck down for long.
Plus it is an engagement/drive problem, so starter needs to come apart. Plus it is a rebuilt the previous owner put on. All things point to replace with a new one, not feeling like core charge issues.
In the old days, I would rebuild in a heart beat. Just not a good option for me now.

The Napa starter I bought mentioned above was brand new with no core charge or return.

Hey Tom, I had to replace mine in a pinch a couple weeks ago. From what I read, both styles will fit and work. They are both gear reduction, but the smaller two bolt starter is faster. That's what I stick with, oreilly reman with a lifetime warranty. It's not that hard to replace if I have to do it again. And like I said, I was in a pinch (camper in the air above the truck and truck couldn't get out to finish setting up.)

I noticed that. Mine has just started having problems, so I have a little time to explore options. We are an hour from Ft Collins, so plenty of options there.
Thanks.

Yeah Jeff, that is what I am trying to avoid. I still have a choice so far.
On a side note, keep an eye on your fifth wheel pin box area. Mine had some bad cracks on the frame around where the brackets weld on. Had it repaired in Loveland. Very lucky it didn't come apart while towing.

Did the starter say who makes it? Or the box?
I found two online for NAPA, one is Nippondenso, and the one you used just says Ford when the parts guy looked it up. Both brand new, but they stock the 9296.
