Alright all I'm new to this so sorry if this is the wrong thread. So I got a 2003 6.0 f250. Motor rebuilt was just done. Has 175cc injectors arp studs oem gaskets. After market oil cooler. Blue spring upgrade new stock turbo and rest is pretty much stock. So question is I'm trying to build this as a track truck that runs low 12s. As of right now with tuner I'm running about a 13.7 the truck doesn't smoke one bit. So I'm wanting it to be very flashy at the track so I'm looking for a lot of smoke on the launch. I have a edge evaluation programmer and I did one of those dumb smoke switches it barley will do a little cloud of smoke. What else can be done for me to get a cloud when I launch at the track but billowing out on the streets?
Blowing smoke is wasted fuel accomplishing nothing. The reason you see real race trucks with compound turbos running crazy amount of boost billowing smoke at the line is because it needs to be brought up on high boost until it will start to burn the fuel effeciently.
It sounds like your truck is running real good as is. Running it on the street just blowing smoke doesn't get much support around here. Actually I find it far more impressive to see a fast diesel with no smoke.
I haven't seen a lot of folks here wanting to get to 12's on the track. Not many conversations on larger injectors for that matter. I'm sure there are a few guys here that can help with this, maybe they will step in.
Yeah this is a great forum for maintenance and repairs, but not much in the performance aspect. Powerstroke army will be your best bet for that...although you will definitely get hell asking this question
People that go to the track are aiming for their turbo to light asap, and have as little smoke as possible to not cause a scene and actually make power/launch quick. Unsure why you are trying to go fast and do the opposite?
And not that im encouraging this, but im not sure how you did your smoke switch...but it should black out the street lol...especially if you have 175s with a stock turbo...
Hell I thought my truck was in the 12s , or maybe all the other dura max's and Dodges were just slow , be careful what you throw at your 6.0 especially the Trans some tunes are not good , but the Garret power max is a good choose with a tranny compatible loony tune or was it a Can of Tuna
I'm no expert at diesel racing but fast trucks roll coal. Here is a video of a truck doing 11's for an example and there are many more. It doesn't compute but fast diesels do smoke.
A 6.0 has a decently strong bottom end but the valve train isn't great and cylinder head clamping forces aren't even with only four bolts for each cylinder. Once that's addressed, it's bigger injectors, fuel delivery upgrades and fuel type (alcohol, meth even? They do smell odd). Cam, head work, turbo, NOx, and then custom tuning to make your combo work. And of course there's safety equipment, gearing, tires, and putting the truck on a weight loss plan. But there are a few folks who have had success racing 6.0's. Good luck and post up some pics or videos from the track.
The guys are right, most folks on this site pull campers and use their trucks for work and stuff. Most of the threads are about repairs and we generally love OEM parts but it's still cool to see a 6.0 going fast.
