Help please.I have 1988 Ranger 2.0 with carburator that idles good, but pops with a blue flame. It backfires when upshifting.Any suggestions on what to replace?
Thank you,,,,,,Tim
Hey there engc570 and welcome to FTE!
You may want to check your carb settings. Sounds like you're running a little rich. Have you done a tune-up lately, or had a timing problem. Maybe a stretched timing belt?
Check your repair manual under trouble shooting, and see what it suggest's to do.
Get back to us ok? Thanks.... Talk to you later....
Thanks scooter,I checked the timeing, plugs, plug wires, vacuum hoses (for correct routing and wear),and my patience.lol..Everything is good (if not new).I replaced the coil and the ignition modulator.I ordered the EGR valve and it will be in Thursday.I will check the carb settings this evening.BTW Great site yall have here.I'll post what I find that corrects the problem.
Thanks again,, Tim
Well I found out today that they (Ford) do not make an EGR for the 1988 2.0 Ranger anymore.I checked the dealer,Auto Zone,Napa,O'Reilly,Car-Quest,and a few mom and pop shops.(BOOO HOOO) I thinking of engin swap for the Danger Ranger.
EGR Part # is E87E-9H495-B3A just in case anyone needs the # in the future.I'll keeep everyone posted on the project.
New update....I talked to a wise mechanic and he told me to check the forced air diverter check valve.I pluged the hose that went from the air pump to the exhaust manafold,(TaDa)!!!!! No more backfire or blue flame. Now all I have to do is buy the part and im good to go on that problem.Looks like it off to the next project.I'll post a pict of the progress when I figure out how to do that.I have alot of plans for the ranger.BTW thx for all the help
Hey there engc570! Way to go! I like being right, but I'd rather you get the problem fixed and me be wrong, and you still having a problem. Good work and even better for not giving up!
Talk with you later..... Thanks to Ken as well!
