im looking at an 86 ranger but the rear cab mount brackets on the frame are rusting out, how serious of a problem is this, how hard to fix? where can i take it to be fixed, and anyone know a ball park figure onhow much it will cost? im paying $500 for the whole truck
Hey ther nick11082001!
I'm sorry man.... Forget the truck. If the rears are bad, the fronts will be next. They may be able to do a decent job of repairs, but it may cost you another $600- $800 for the job. It is a big job, since the entire cab SHOULD be removed to do a proper job. Most collision shops can do the work, but when they can get to it. You'll pay twice that if you go to a resto-shop, but they do quality work.
It's up to you, but the truck isn't worth $100.00 as it sits right now. Sorry.. Get back to us if you decide either way.
Talk with you later....
so the brackets that are riveted to the frame at the rear of the cab which hold the rubber bushings (those are whats rusted) not all the way out yet, but its enough to concern me, is it really not worth it, and expensive to replace these? the front mounts look good, as do the floor. the more advice i can get the better, i really would like to buy this truck, it runs very well, drives very well,
Hey Nick! Thanks for the update! The brackets themselves are really no big problem. I assumed you ment the CAB CORNERS, icluding the floor.
In that case, buy the truck for $300.00 and tell him/her that you'll need the other $200.00 for the brackets repairs. Done deal.
In this case, you may want to consider a resto shop to do the work. Anyone can weld on new brackets, but you don't want your doors opening up, because the cab didn't get aligned properly.
Some collision shops are great, but a resto shop will do the job right the first time.
Good luck on your new purchase and send us some pics if you can.... Thanks... Talk with you later....
found out it would cost about $400 or so to replace those brackets, if they are avaliable, thats what a body shop quoted me, i guess i will keep looking for a truck elsewhere
Hey Nick! That must be one slow shop, to give you a price like that!
A temporary fix I did was to purchase large brackets from our local Farm and Family Center for small tractors. I got the ones to add additional weights for the front and rear.
I jacked up the body (2x4 on top of bottle jack) then raised it up, while keeping an eye on the door and fender seam. I used the brackets to just keep the body from breaking any thing, until I got the repairs done. About 2 months later. They held up pretty good.
I understand the over-all cost is bad from calling one collision shop.
You may be able to get a set from an auto recycler. Don't give up just yet. Or have you? Having the body in great condition just may be worth the cost of repairs!
You say it runs good and looks good. Give it some more thought.
Talk with you later....
it hink that im gonna buy it, i had a mechanic friend look it over, and he said that the brackets weren't bad enough to worry about, but yes it does run, drive, and stop very well, the interior is in very nice shape, the body is kinda rusty, but that doesnt bother me too much.
Hey Nick! Yeah, I know we've both have probably driven worse! HEE HEE! Well, I'm sure you've got better things to do than to talk with us for a few days. We'll probably hear from you next week. That'll give you enough time to check everything out and get it on the road. Talk with you then....
