Need to crank NOT start

I am testing for an issue and want to crank the motor without starting it. I have disconnected the dist coil wire in the past but I don't know if that is the correct way to do it. My question is, what is the proper way to do this? If I need to pull the Fuel pump fuse, which one is it? Otherwise what do I do? Thanks

Disconnecting the coil wire is fine, however the fuel injectors will still squirt fuel and could flood the cylinders. I would pull the fuel pump fuse or relay in addition to disconnecting the coil wire. I don't know which fuse it is off the top of my head. You can find out which one it is in your owner's manual though.

Hold the accelerator to the floor while cranking. The computer will see WOT from the TPS feedback so it will not trigger the injectors.

If you want to be for sure - for sure pull Fuse O in the engine compartment fuse box. Or pull the Fuel Pump relay. And another option is to trigger the inertia switch behind the passenger side kick panel by smacking it (switch) with your foot or small hammer.

I can do that. I read about holding the accelerator down but they said it was for OBDII cars. Is that true or BS? Thank you for the additional help.

You could also tap the inertia switch with a hammer, I believe it's behind the passenger kick panel.

It works on these trucks too. Did it many times on all three of my OBS vintage trucks. Two 1993 Lightnings and my old F350 w/5.8L engine.

You can also jumper 12v to the start terminal on the starter solenoid on the fender and leave the key off.

That's the way I do it too. A lot easier than hunting for separate ways to turn off both the ignition and fuel.

Does that mean to put a jumper cable on one of the battery post and then connect to the starter solenoid. If so which battery post do I use? Sorry, this is all new to me and I want to do it right. Thanks Sandy

there is a green wire hooked to a black connector next to the starter solenoid.

if you unhook it and start the truck, it will crank but not start.

not sure if its a good idea, but I know it will, becauase I unhooked mine when I changed the pigtail on my alternator.

There's a small wire that connects to the starter solenoid with a push-on connector. Pull that off, and that's the starter terminal you want to use. Jump that terminal (not the wire that's now loose, the terminal) to the positive terminal of the battery. Or you can use the hot terminal on the starter solenoid instead of the battery (follow the cable from the hot terminal to the solenoid).

Great explanations guys. Thank you so much.
