Plastic oil pan

I have a 2011 that has the plastic oil pan which developed a leak recently. I was told to pull it and reseal it with silver RTV. I pulled and did that but pulled the gasket and used only RTV. I've always heard to not use RTV with a gasket but now I'm second guessing myself. It's still curing and I haven't added oil yet so I can still pull it without wasting the new oil. Did I do it correctly by pulling the gasket? I filled the channel and heaped it over about 1/8". TIA

Great forum btw!!

I've done it both ways, used just RTV or combined both. You should be fine as is but if it would make you feel better you could use the gasket and if it's the paper type just smear a little bit of RTV on both sides of the gasket and put it back together.

Thanks for the reply. It was a rubber gasket that fit into the channel. I took it out and filled it with RTV and heaped it over.

I never use a gasket and RTV. You just double your chance for a leak.

If it's a rubber gasket don't use RTV on it. You don't need it.

RTV is not friends with rubber or silicone... it should hold for a while..

but the RTV does not let the gasket to Lock into location.. so may shift around from heat/cool cycles.

I removed the gasket and just used RTV. I let it sit overnight and filled it this morning. Drove it a bit and got it up to temp and it appears to be working.
