Yes, it works as long as you are not using 5th wheel attached. If you have a 5th wheel then remove it.

Usually truck is always hooked to the fifth but the bed extender would be nice to keep contents away from the hitch. Any foreseeable issues using it while in the "assembled in the bed" position?

Sorry I wish I could help, but my truck came with a 5th wheel, but I dont see me using it any time soon. Ive never owned one or even know how one works. It came with an option I didnt care for, but got a decent deal on it so just took it.
